Q. What are dental implants?

A. Dental implants are titanium screw-like replacements for the root portion of missing natural teeth. Because of titanium’s extraordinary properties, an implant fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for replacement teeth. There are several kinds of dental implant solutions. In some cases, replacement teeth are removable. In others, teeth are affixed permanently inside the mouth, like natural teeth. Dental implants may support single replacement teeth, multiple replacement teeth, or all teeth in the upper and/or lower arch (jaw). Four implants uphold an entire arch in the All-on-4 dental procedure.

Q. How are implants superior to dentures or bridges?

 A. Without the root structure of a natural tooth present, the jawbone can shrink, making a person’s face appear older than it is. Dental implants prevent that, and look and perform more like natural teeth. They are rooted in the bone. No artificial plastic covers the roof of the mouth, and the need for adhesives and denture creams is eliminated. Unlike a bridge, where adjacent teeth must be filed down, dental implants do not impact healthy neighbouring teeth.

Q. Are implants painful and do they create sensitivity?

A. Our patients typically report far less discomfort and a quicker healing time than they expected. We recommend mild pain relievers for two or three days following the procedure, and after that patients are typically pain-free. Sensitivity is usually not an issue. Most of our patients eat solid food on the day of surgery. You will be eating, laughing, smiling and enjoying life as if you just grew a brand new set of natural teeth.

Q.  If I need to replace all my teeth, or all my uppers or lowers, or if I already wear a denture, what treatment options do you recommend?

 A. While there are several treatment options available, the new All-on-4 implant solution is the one that brings our patients closest to feeling like they have their own natural teeth.

Q. What is the All-on-4 implant solution, and why is it becoming such a popular treatment alternative?

A. All-on-4 is the next step in the evolution of full-arch tooth replacement, providing vast improvements over conventional dentures. It is the easiest, most economical way that you can have a full arch of fixed, non-removable, replacement teeth. They look like natural teeth and fit very securely with no need for adhesives. Your new teeth will not rub or create sore spots, and they will not slip or fall out. You can fully taste and enjoy your food because the roof of your mouth is not covered. Permanent teeth don’t come out at night, nor do they need special cleaning. You can eat whatever you like with confidence. You smile naturally, knowing your teeth look real. You can get All-on-four even if you require extractions. All these factors make All-on-4 the increasingly preferred solution for people facing or already wearing dentures.

Q. How will I clean my fixed teeth if I can't remove them?

A. Your teeth can be cleaned with a tooth brush although a water pick is recommended as well. It's as simple as that.

Q. Do you perform bone grafting if there isn’t enough bone to hold the implants?

A. Even if the bone has significantly receded, the All-On-4 procedure can usually be performed without the need for bone grafting because of the innovative way the implants are placed. This is often not true for alternative implant techniques. We frequently meet patients who have been told by their health care professionals that they require grafting due to lack of bone. They are delighted to hear that with the All-On-4 procedure, bone grafts are usually unnecessary.

Q. Can old age be a problem?

A. Health is more a determining factor than age. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you are probably healthy enough to receive dental implants. Dental implant treatment my not be recommended for patients suffering from some chronic illnesses. An examination by one of our Cholakis Dental Implant dentists, along with a review of your dental and medical history, will help to determine whether you qualify for an implant procedure. Most patients do qualify.

Q. Can I get dental implants if I smoke?

A. Yes, however...there is an increased risk of complications with active smokers, especially in procedures involving bone grafting. This will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Q.  How much do implants cost?

A. The cost of treatment varies significantly with the solution provided. Because we understand that price is a factor in your decision to proceed, during your consultation we will present you with an assortment of dental implant options. All fees are explained in advance. You will be provided with a written quote that includes all aspects of your treatment.

Q. Does insurance cover dental implants?

A. Some insurance companies offer partial reimbursement. It is best to speak directly with your insurance provider.  We also accept personal cheques and credit cards. The cost of implants is a medical expense that can be deducted from your income tax, making it possible to recoup some of your expense. If you own a business, there are additional possible tax advantages, which you should discuss with your accountant.
